At Mosaic Wellness & Recovery, our goal is to deliver compassionate treatment using evidence-based therapies and holistic approaches that help individuals move forward with hope, stability, and a plan to sustain long-lasting recovery after treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Defined?

There are moments in life that change us forever. Sometimes those moments are beautiful. The moments that are marked by pain, fear, or loss can be defined as trauma. For many people, the aftermath of a traumatic event lingers long after the danger has passed.

PTSD is a complex mental health condition that can develop after someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. The world may look the same, but inside, everything feels different. This can be the reality of living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance.

PTSD is often misunderstood. It’s not simply a reaction to stress, and it’s not a sign of weakness. Many people with post-traumatic stress disorder also struggle with shame and low self-esteem—feeling “broken,” blaming themselves, or believing they should have handled it differently—when these are common trauma responses, not character flaws.

It’s also important to recognize that PTSD doesn’t only affect the mind. It can influence physical health, relationships, and overall quality of life. Left untreated, post-traumatic stress disorder can contribute to depression, anxiety disorders, chronic medical concerns, and for some people, substance use as a way to cope.

What can Trauma & PTSD Look Like?

Trauma is deeply personal, and no two people experience it in the same way. It can look and feel like emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, fear, or a sense of detachment from the world, and it is often connected to other mental health disorders.

For some people, trauma is a single incident. For others, it’s the result of prolonged or repeated exposure to distressing situations. Traumatic events can range from natural disasters and serious accidents to violence, abuse, or the sudden loss of a loved one.

Many individuals experience trauma through their work, such as first responders and healthcare professionals. Others are impacted by sudden loss or repeated exposure to distressing events.

PTSD can affect relationships, work, health, and a person’s sense of identity. Over time, post-traumatic stress disorder can narrow life and erode confidence, making even small tasks feel intimidating. Symptoms may lead to isolation, emotional distance, chronic stress, and difficulty feeling safe. Treatment helps rebuild self-trust, not just manage symptoms.

At Mosaic Wellness & Recovery, we recognize how trauma can show up differently across ages and life experiences, and we build treatment plans that fit the individual, not a label.

Recognizing the Symptoms of PTSD

PTSD symptoms can look different from person to person. Some individuals experience flashbacks, vivid nightmares, or intrusive memories that make it feel as if the event is happening again. Others feel constantly on edge, easily startled, or overwhelmed by anxiety. Avoidance is also common, people may steer clear of places, people, or situations that remind them of what happened.

It’s not uncommon for people with PTSD to also struggle with depression, anxiety, or substance use. When PTSD and another condition occur together, it’s known as dual diagnosis, and it requires integrated treatment.

Understanding symptoms is often the first step toward healing. While each person’s experience is unique, hallmark post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms commonly fall into these categories:

  • Re-Experiencing Symptoms
Flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive memories that can feel vivid and unwanted, sometimes triggered by sounds, smells, places, dates, or stressful situations that remind the brain of danger.
  • Avoidance
Pulling away from reminders of the trauma, including people, places, conversations, or activities, often to prevent distress, but over time it can shrink life, reinforce fear, and increase isolation.
  • Negative Changes in Mood and Thinking
Persistent guilt, shame, numbness, or hopelessness; difficulty trusting others; feeling detached from relationships; and trouble remembering parts of what happened, often paired with harsh self-judgment or a “the world isn’t safe” mindset.
  • Hyperarousal
Feeling tense or “on edge,” being easily startled, having sleep disruption, irritability, or angry outbursts, because the nervous system stays stuck in a threat-response mode even when danger has passed.

PTSD & Co-Occurring Disorders / Addictions

For some people, alcohol or drugs become a way to numb hyperarousal, anxiety, nightmares, or painful memories. Over time, this can develop into a substance use disorder alongside PTSD.

PTSD itself does not require detox. However, if substance use is part of what you’re facing, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) may be included when appropriate to support stabilization and reduce cravings, alongside trauma-informed therapy and dual diagnosis care. From there, treatment can continue with trauma-informed therapy and dual diagnosis care, addressing both post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and substance use patterns together.

PTSD rarely exists in isolation. Many people also experience depression, anxiety, or substance use disorders. This is known as dual diagnosis, and it requires an integrated approach.

Mosaic Wellness & Recovery treatment tracks are designed to address PTSD and co-occurring conditions simultaneously, supporting more stable recovery and improved quality of life.
